We are back in New Zealand, this time exploring Northland, the northern most part of the country. It has a famously “sub-tropical climate”, so seemed like a good option for a mid-winter vacation. Today is only our first day, and while I wouldn’t say it was warm, it was certainly not as cold as my previous NZ winters have been.
Brick Bay Sculpture Trail
This area is wine country, and there are many vineyards to visit for wine tasting and delicious food. We headed first thing (10am – we are on holidays!) to Brick Bay Vineyard, not for an early morning tipple, but for their sculpture trail, featuring some 50 or so large-scale works scattered along a 2km path through native bush and open pastures. A lovely walk, with impressive art. Here are just a few favourites – check the caption for title and artist, and if you are keen there’s lots of info at the official website.
Matakana
Matakana is a lovely village. We stopped at Matakana Village Kitchen for lunch – gorgeous spot and seriously delicious food – and then had a bit of a stroll and a window shop. On Saturdays they have a wonderful farmers’ market, and I’m sorry we missed that.
Parry Kauri Park
Parry Kauri Park is an area of native New Zealand bush, including many kauri trees. It was a lovely refreshing stroll along elevated boardwalks.
