Vienna Day 5

Vienna Day 4
Prague Day 3

Our last day in Vienna. We finally got to go into the nave of Stephansdom (3rd time lucky), then visited the “Kaisergruft” (the Imperial Crypt). Then we caught a train the Prague which is such a relaxing way to travel. Not much scenery this time as it was dark.

Stephansdom

Stephansdom, or St Stephen’s Church, Vienna, is an awe-inspiring building. You can enter the church for free, but it cost 4 Euros to go into the nave – money well worth spending, to get a close look at the stunning carvings on the pulpit, if nothing else. Look closely to find a self-portrait of the mason/sculptor Anton Pilgram who built this church. As it was Christmas, there were lovely flowers and pretty lights which only added to the atmosphere.

KAISERGRUFT

The Kaisergruft is the burial chamber containing the tombs of most of the Hapsburgs between 1632 and 2011. Many of the tombs in the Kaisergruft are elaborately decorated. The tomb of Maria Theresa and her husband Franz is the grandest and largest of all the tombs. They are depicted sitting up gazing at each other. Some of the tombs bear sober reminders that even those who wear the imperial crown will meet their maker.
